By Kelli Mahoney I am a firm believer in using lists to plan a party. In fact, I have been told many times that my lists are too detailed. Yet, when it comes to planning an event, my lists have been a saving grace in keeping me from getting too overwhelmed. When I start to plan a party, I most likely have a specific idea in mind of what I want. Then I think about all the details of what I want and begin to make lists of what I will need to make that idea come to be. Things like dcor, food, invitations, guests, and more all get compiled into my list. I start with one big list, kind of a brainstorm, of everything I can think of, then I break it down into categories. Where am I going to have the party? What am I going to serve my guests? What activities will there be? What decorations do I want? All these things are divided among different lists. Then I go into the most minute details on each list. For instance, if I am throwing a medium-sized picnic where I am serving picnic food, I make a list of the food I need catered and the ingredients for the food I will be making myself. This list will help me know what I need from the grocer in the days before the party. I pay attention to each item on my list, too, so that I know how much time I will need to get everything. For instance, if I am throwing an Under the Sea themed party and I want balloon sculptures that look like seahorses, I would need to give the vendor enough notice to make them and have them delivered. Formal invitations sometimes take weeks to print, as so programs and certain party favors. Lists and timelines go hand-in-hand for my planning, so I often use a calendar that functions as a planner, with a monthly calendar and pages for lists. There are excellent pre-printed planners that will work well for any type of party, and there are even planners that are specifically designed for certain types of party like weddings. Creating lists will help keep you focused and organized, which is the key to any good party. By having detailed lists, you will not be caught off-guard the day of the party so you will be able to play the hostess flawlessly, because you will not be running around trying to pick up the things you forgot! What color is it? Are the numbers red or green? Are they small or big? Now, imagine the sound it makes. You can hear it clearly in your mind right now, cant you? Does that buzz or beep make you cringe? Is it soft, loud or does it make your heart feel like its going to jump out of your chest? Whatever your alarm clock does, Im sure of one thing: it is one of the worst sounds in the world, because when youre snuggled warmly under your covers and that piercing sound sends shivers down your back, the most tempting thing to do is to hit snooze and roll back over under the covers. So theres definitely nothing exciting about your alarm clock, unless of course youre a child on Christmas morning or youre a golfer with a 7:00 A.M tee-time at Pebble Beach. How about this: does your alarm give you a kick-start, encouraging you to get out of bed and exercise? My guess would be no, nothing of the sorts. I bet the snooze button is practically worn off the surface. But what if I told you that you could train your mind to get you excited to go to the gym or go for a run when you hear that bone-chilling buzz or beep? Would you believe me? Read on. When people come to my office for weight-loss, the number one excuse that I hear for not exercising is that theres just not enough time. And when I say, how about getting-up a half hour of forty five minutes earlier in the morning and doing it then, most of my clients cringe. But I can tell you this; I have helped countless people to do just that, including myself. Its all relative; whatever your mind believes, it will produce, and when it associates exercising at 6:00 A.M with being tied to a whipping post, its not likely that youre going to get out of bed and do it. But this is changeable. You just have to change the way your mind thinks. Power Programming is a system I created that will teach you how to associate excitement and determination with waking-up and getting your workout in then. Its pretty simple in fact. All you have to do is train your mind, but most of us dont really know how to do this. The techniques are pretty simple in fact. Heres how it works: 1. The first step is to dedicate 15 or 20 minutes of your time, several times a week. Go find a comfortable place with no distractions. Close your eyes and begin breathing deeply and let your mind drift into a comfortable, relaxed place for a little while. Anytime you do this, you are opening your subconscious reservoir, and this is the part of your mind that is easily programmable. This is how you change the way you react to your thoughts. 2. Once youve reached a relaxed state, the next step is to use some simple imagery. First see an image of yourself, exactly how you want to look and feel. Make the image vivid and get excited about it. Make it your goal. Next, imagine yourself feeling more motivated than youve ever felt before. See and feel yourself walking or running briskly on your treadmill. See and feel yourself pumping iron at the gym and feeling good about it. Create whatever you want, but feel it baby, feel it. 3. Finally, imagine the sound of your alarm and say to yourself over and over again in your mind, from now on the very first thing I think as soon as I hear that alarm go off is leaping out of bed and exercising. Surprisingly, youre going to see that this indeed will be the first thing running through your mind when you hear that alarm. And instantly, all of those positive feeling and images you created earlier are going to emerge. You will actually feel motivated to get out of bed and after you do it for a couple of weeks youre going to start feeling excited about it. I know it sounds too good to be true, maybe even a bit quirky, but Im telling you it works. Everything is mind over matter. Soon, getting-up and getting-in your workout in the morning will just be another part of your day, much like brushing your teeth or taking a shower. You just have to dedicate the 15 or 20 minutes of mental work to make it happen. If exercising in the morning is something you long for, or, if you are in a little bit of a rut with your workout routine, training your mind should be the first thing you do. Soon you will see that the agonizing sound of your alarm clock isnt so agonizing after all. Its all in your head and once you learn how to change what goes on up there, anything is possible. How Can You Fish Without A Real Fishing Pole?

By Elizabeth Hesson As a young girl, the only other kid in the neighborhood I had to play with was a boy my age that lived down the road from me. We lived in the country in a quiet neighborhood with a sheep farm down the road that had a winding stream that ran behind their property and my neighbor’s house as well. Needless to say, I learned to play with “boy toys” such as his farm toys, cars, etc, and played Cowboys and Indians (that should give you a hint of what era!), and I was always the Indian for some reason. For some reason, he never wanted to reciprocate in playing “house” or dressing dolls! However, we discovered a hobby that we both enjoyed. Fishing! The creek behind his home was our playground and we spent hours wading, swimming, catching crawdads and fishing together. I never touched those crawdads! They had pinchers and looked scary! Ewww! Once I got past touching those nasty squirming worms, and baiting my own hook (he wouldn’t let me use his lures!), I really had fun fishing. We were about 9 years old and got along pretty good for a boy and a girl. He had his own fishing pole and neat looking lure, and I had none! There was an old fishing pole that his Dad had that I was allowed to use and when that fishing pole broke–I had nothing to fish with! My friend didn’t feel sorry enough for me to let me use his fishing pole, so he and I started poking around in his Dad’s work shop and found a long stick and some string which we tied to the end of the stick. Then for a hook, we used a nail and hammered it into a shape that we thought made a good hook. There it was…my homemade fishing rod! I actually got a worm onto that nail and cast my line out into the creek at the deepest point I could find. Believe it or not…I actually caught a fish on that homemade fishing pole! Our parents were amazed! It wasn’t a keeper; in fact is wasn’t much beyond the minnow stage, but hey..I caught a fish! That’s what it was all about for us! We have went our separate ways in life and I often wonder if he remembers the home-made fishing pole we made that hot summer afternoon all those years ago. Kids will demand to be hip like their buddies from school who sport the latest cell phone, or any cell phone for that matter. Parents will be pressed to give in to ignescent demands of ‘everyone else has one’, or ‘I want to be cool like the other kids’. Sure it may be good to have your kid fit in, but since when is school primarily a popularity contest? Furthermore, when does fitting in cost so much?! The thing with cell phones is there are monthly costs attached — not a one time sunk cost. Chances are you will pay the monthly fees. Some options are available to have ‘pay-as-you-go’ options, you pay for whatever minutes you purchase, however, either or, the more your kid talks on the phone, the more you pay. Dont forget too that cell phones are more than phones. Almost all (the Firefly does not) have text messaging and more complicated communication tools included that have an attached cost as well. There you have it, some helpful reminders to consider before going out and dropping a couple hundred dollars and an additional twenty per month, minimum, on a cell phone for junior. Candidiasis, The Silent Killer?

By Tracy Finney What is Candida? Candida is a yeast that can be found in nearly every one. However, when someone is referring to “Candida” they are probably meaning Candidiasis, which is an over growth of Candida. When I first discovered what Candida was I was rather frightened by what I had learned. An overgrowth of Candida can be the underlying/cause of many health issues. Yet Candida is not often acknowledge or treated in most conventional practices. Candida works in this way; the yeast is found naturally in a human body. The problem occurs when the yeast is allowed to grow uncontrolled by our bodies natural defenses against it. Within our gastrointestinal tract, our bodies also host a “friendly” bacteria (known as lactobacillus). These good guys prevent the overgrowth of yeast. So when everything is right and we are healthy our body keeps the yeast growth in check naturally. However, there are many factors that can control this balance and create an ideal environment for the yeast to spread and multiply. Some causes for this overgrowth can be an overuse or prolonged period of antibiotics. The antibiotics kill the good bacteria which keeps the yeast in check, this then allows the yeast to grow. Other common causes are birth control pills, food allergies, stress, anemia, and more. When Candidiasis becomes a problem some common symptoms are irritability, unable to concentrate, anxiety, depression, bloating, excessive gas, and more. The yeast will actually compete with our bodies and rob it of vital nutrients. It then releases toxic by products, which cause a heavy burden on our immune system. Because of this vicious cycle of stealing nutrients, releasing toxins and overloading our immune systems it’s no surprise that the condition of Candidiasis creates other health conditions. Because Candidiasis is so often over looked by today’s medical personal, and taking into account this conditions ability to create other more serious health problems, I think it is appropriately called the silent killer. When a yeast overgrowth takes place in our body it can create such problems as heartburn, IBS, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, depression, diabetes, hypoglycemia, leukemia, and many other diseases. So what can you do to prevent or stop this silent killer in your life and those you love? To begin with Candida is difficult to kill. It thrives on sugar, so that is the first place to begin. Alter your diet (to the best of your ability). Avoid all sweets, limit all foods containing yeast or mold (such as cheeses, breads, sour cream) Fruits also contain a high sugar content, so limit your consumption of fruit. Avoid alcohol, and do not smoke. In addition to watching what you eat you can add helpful supplements. The first thing to add to your war plan is the “good guys”, the Lactobacillus. These may also be referred to as Probiotics or Flora. Try to find a good, non dairy, supplement. Plenty of garlic is helpful. Garlic contains Allicin which is an antifungal component. Olive leaf extract is excellent. It kills fungi, yeast, viruses, and bacteria (however, it doesn’t seem to destroy the friendly bacteria). I also use oil of oregano.
